Does anyone know who makes a HU with a hard drive built into the unit itself so you can load it up with MP3s or whatever?

Clarion makes (or made - do not know if it is still an offered feature) HUs that have (or had...) something they called "MusicCatcher" that would let you rip tracks directly from the CD that was loaded onto an internal HD though I do not know in which format.

The upcoming Kenwood KDC-X991 is supposed to have 512mb of internal storage as well.

I would wager there are others but I cannot say for certain.

You may like the Riocar Empeg. It's pure awesomeness distilled and rebuilt into an mp3 player for your car. Can hold 2 laptop drives which are easily upgradable to a maximum of 240GB; runs a linux kernel with a web server built in so you can stream mp3s from the mp3 player directly via ethernet...to more than one person at once. Tons of mad visualizations, a 20 band fully programmable Q parametric EQ. pioneer avic z1. Does not get much better than that. And i have seen them for about $1600 BNIB.

JVC has a new unit on the market that is a 3.5 inch screen with nav and a 40 gig hard drive. That might be up your ally. Its also single din so it fits pretty much everything
