I was trying to remove my head unit the other day using the keys that were in the car when i bought it wouldnt work so I took the bit off behind the face plate and it appears that the head unit has been screwed in to something and the screws are at 90 degree angles. Has anyone come across this one before and know of a solution other than to remove parts of the dash itself?

there is none. the radio is what's called iso-mounted, which is when you secure the headunit to the factory brackets in the vehicle.

What make/model is the car?

Not sure on that 1 since I'm not in the UK market. Google tells me the avensis is the same platform as the scion tc, but not sure if the dash would be the same. If you can post a pic of the dash I can probably tell you disassembly instructions, or you can attemp yourself. Just look for any screws, and if there's none, gently pry with a panel popper and see what happens.

Here are a couple of images, it appears that the middle part of the dash is attached to the other side, and the bottom bit covers the entire centre console between the seats.

That trim literally just pops off. Take out the ash tray, and then pop out the trim around gently. Start in one of the corners and once you get 1 corner up, the rest will come easy. It's just clips holding it in. I would use a panel popper, tho, don't just jam in a flathead or something.
