head unit installed, couple speakers not working?

I recently installed a new 4800MP pioneer head unit in a 2001 Civic and after installing it and playing with the balance/fader I noticed that the sound from the rear left speaker was non-existent and the sound from the front right factory component set was ALMOST non-existent (except for very quiet music coming from the tweeter only). Now the owner doesnt want me to go ripping off the doors to install new speakers if its not the speakers that are broken ( in other words, if something is wrong with the head unit) because when installing the head unit, I left a teeny tiny scratch on the dash, and he doesnt want that happening again...my bad.

So does it sound like the speakers are bad, easy fix, replace the speakers? Or does it sound like the HU has a couple bad channels? Or what is the simplest way to find out?

Thanks alot to all replies

PS before the install, I am not sure whether or not the speakers were working, not my car, and the owner said those speakers might have been working, but he isnt sure, and he can barely tell they arent working now, so he wont be any help.
