HDTV, HDMI, LCD, DVI, not my forte

Bear with me here for a minute as this is my plan.

Buying a 24” LCD computer monitor with a 1920X1200 native resolution with HDMI and DVI inputs, while using it as both a HDTV/regular satellite tv and a computer/gaming monitor.

I am uncertain of a few things though,

One, will I need a tv tuner card for the monitor to display the HD/satellite signal from the HD satellite receiver via HDMI cable?

Two, if the monitor has no speakers and I am using a HD satellite receiver via HDMI output, can I get at least a Dolby Digital 5.1 signal to be outputted from the receiver via the TOSLINK output so I can get SOME sound from my normal H/T receiver? No the H/T receiver doesn't have any HDMI input/outputs, It's old(er) but still gets the job done.

THX for any help at all

does your box have an HDMI/DVI output?

you may need an HD box for those outputs or so your box can process HD.

i don't have a dish but with comcast i have to use an HD box to get my HD channels to show up. on my previous box it wouldn't process any HD channels.

I will be upgrading the dish receiver to the HD DVR model that does have HDMI output but no DVI out, like tomorrow or Friday.

I am almost sure the monitor would be able to handle it, (everyone always says that computer monitors are MUCH better in handling higher resolutions than tv's) but am really unsure of how I am going to get any audio signal to my amplifier/receivers because that would be going through the HDMI cable and not through the toslink like I need it to.

That's why I asked; I have the same setup. With a dish though, I'm not sure.

you should be able to set the DVR to output audio through the optical output to your receiver, just make sure your receiver has an optical input
Ya I have three different amp/receivers sitting here and they all have toslink optical digital inputs. Just not sure if the dish receiver will output the video on HDMI and audio on toslink. what a mess I swear.

it should, tons of people route the video just to the monitor and audio to the receiver so if it didnt that would be kinda useless

some monitors offer digital outputs so you can just run the signal from the monitor to receiver

Ya, the bad thing is that I already bought the monitor and fell in love with it lol. For $400 BNIB with W, I just have to figure a way around things, but am uncertain if they will actually work or not. If not, I guess I will have to spend the extra money to go with something that will work or else, drop the coinage on ANOTHER receiver lol. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

I tell ya, it was a hell of a jump going from a 19" wide screen to a 24"

I sit between 3-8 feet away from this depending on if it's a movie or playing on the net and this is plenty big enough, Although a 28" prolly would have filled the gap in my desk a little nicer haha. THX for the help
