Having some trouble installing an aftermarket stereo on an old Chevy

Old 1980's stereo was rubbish, so I got an aftermarket one and installed it. Works fine, problem is that when I turn the lights on, all the inside electrics, including the radio, turn off (except one turn blinker light, which turns on and stays on). Wires that came out of the truck for the old stereo were a yellow hot, a gray (which as far as i can tell, was only for the radio backlights), and a black ground. I hooked up the grounds together, hooked up the yellow coming out of the truck to the red and yellow coming out of the new stereo, and capped the gray. I thought that maybe trying to connect the radio straight to the battery would help, but I've just disconnected everything from the stereo, nothing is shorting on anything, all the wires are just hanging, but I still have the same problem.. all fuses are fine. I know it worked fine before I tried to put in this radio, so it doesn't seem so likely that its something else.. I've also tried connecting all the wires to eachother in just about every possible combination to no avail. (1987 Chevy s10)
