Hardwire Axim to Car Questions.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really dislike having a cigarette adapter for my axim when I want to use it on the go. I have a X50 and X30 both of which is used regularly in my car. I want to tap off the cigarette lighter power to hardwire my axim to my car.

I understand that the battery power is 12v and that my X30 need 5.4v. I'm not quite sure how this works, but believe that this could break the axim because of the voltage difference. The amp requriments is about 2.4amps so I can easily wire an in-line fuse on the wire to take care of that.

The question is can I wire to the 12v source even though I only need 5.4v. Will the axim only take what it needs from this source? What is the solution to this problem if I can not simply tap of the cigaratte lighter power? What can I buy to regulate voltage output?

You would have to some how find a way to reduce the voltage, because your axim doesn't regulate the voltage on it's own, the cigarette adapter does. There should be a brick somewhere along the line between the plug for your axim and the cigarette adapter, and this is what reduces the voltage. That's pretty much the best I can help ya out with, but I think you may be able to hardwire it as long as the brick is still there between the hardwire and your axim. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

the easy way to do it would be to hack up your cigarette lighter adapter, solder wires to its + and negative pads, and then attach them to the wires that power the cigarette lighter.

Okay, hacking up the cigarette lighter seems like the easiest thing to do thus far. I have included a picture of the adapter because I really don't know what to do from here.

There are two wires coming in: red and black. I'm sure I don't need to touch those as the conversion from 12v to 5.4 hasn't taken place yet. At the other end other end there are 2 black wires both soldered to the metal connection that makes contact with the car plug-in.

What do I need to do now?

That's sounds good, but if anyone knows what I have to do and has time for a reply please let me know. I plan on doing this tomorrow. Thanks.

Ok from that picture you posted the two outer prongs are your grounds. Solder a black wire to those prongs from the inside of the adapter. The middle point (with the fuse) is your positve. Solder a red wire to that, also inside the adapter. You may have to hack up some of the plastic in order to get the wires to fit inside and come out of the adapter.

Once you have the right wires soldered, pop on the other cover and now you have a converter with external leads that you can use to tap into your cars wiring with. I tried making it as clear as I could but let me know if you don't understand something.
