H701 ?s

G-g-g-g-g-unity!
I have the iva-d300. I've been considering getting the h701 for the fine-tuning capabilities. The only freatures I have on my h/u are center frequency, level, and bandwidth.

I'd like to get a good 100x4 rms amp and go active on the front stage, and also use the h701 for it's 5.1 abilities. I would keep the rear fill for that purpose only. I'm just not sure if I can do both: active front stage x 4 & have 5.1 surround with the h701. Also, does the h701 support active? Or would I need to look into something else?

Another question, my crossovers on my SLCs actually at 3800 hz factory, but on my h/u I have the "center" set to 6000 hz. I guess I can't technically say my crossover point is at 6khz, or can I?

Thanks for any help.

I got on crutchfield and was looking at the options for crossover settings for the h701.

Front 1: (select Tweeter or Full Range)

* Tweeter:

o High Pass: 1kHz to 18kHz (cannot be set to "Off")

o Low Pass: 1.1kHz to 20kHz

* Full Range:

o High Pass: 20Hz to 18kHz

o Low Pass: 22Hz to 20kHz

All these High-pass & low-pass are throwing me a curve ball. I'm used to just setting something at a certain frequency and that being the cutoff point. I'm assuming, for example, my SLC's would be setup something like this:

# Front 1: (select Tweeter or Full Range)

* Tweeter:

o High Pass: 4.5kHz (cannot be set to "Off")

o Low Pass: 20kHz

* Full Range:

o High Pass: 70hz

o Low Pass: 4.5kHz

Is this logic correct?

My confusion is mainly from the gap that you could have. If you had LP set to 5kHz on the tweeters, and HP set to 4.5kHz would that mean you would only have 0.5kHz range- since anything below 5kHz is allowed to play, and anything above 4.5kHz is allowed to play? Or am I wrong? I'd appreciate some explanation here.

H701 has the ability to bandpass. Controlling both the hp and lp points and slope of the driver. For 3 way active setups you have to bandpass your mids and mibasses, they have to integrate with each other and the sub/tweeter. Remember, just becuase their is a 500hz "gap" on your slopes does not mean that frequency wont' be played. The drivers play above and below the crossover points, just not as loud that's what the slope controls. How loud it plays below or above the crossover point, it's rated at db/octave. A 12db/octave slope means that if you cross a mid over at 100hz, it would be 12 decibels lower in volume when playing a 50hz tone. So the drivers can still blend.

Ps. I think you have terms confused

hpf: Stops the LOWER end fo the slope, meaning a hpf set at 100hz means it attenuates the singal BELOW that point

LPF: Cuts frequencies above the crossover point.

So in the case of the tweeter, it would be attenuating signas below 4.5khz. It cant' be set to off since tweets are easy to blow if they play to low, especially full range! Your crossover point your speakers is what the crossover is set to by the factory. All the center frequency on the hu does is add a treble boost, like bass boost for tweeters. Honestly, if you this confused i think the h701 might just be a bit much for you to handle. dual 32 band EQ's, lots of crossover points and slopes, could get messy. Unless you know someone who can tune it for you you'll get better sound with the passive crossovers with some time alignment most likely.

thanks. i got it figured out. i had my terms mixed up. i had a different deck last year with some of these controls, but was just thrown off by using an active setup, which i've never done.
