H/U problems

so Ive got a circa-2000 Alpine H/U (model number escapes me) that is having some issues. Its like the sound intermittently jumps from one audio level to another. More specifically, it sounds like the BBE (or equivalent) is turned on and off. Some days I dont notice it but others (maybe specific songs) its pretty annoying.

From what Ive read, it may be a bad ground or power signal. I ran an independent ground for the H/U, but Im not sure what to do with the power. I havent yet checked for continuity between the deck and the harness, though I wouldnt know where to check beyond that junction.

Is the deck just coming to terms with its age?

It might be.

10 years on the road is hard on any electrical component. The volume pot might just be worn from 10 years of turning and it has lost it's sensitivity to movement, causing the rapid jumping in volume.
