It's the wormword that gives absinthe its "effect." It is basically a toxin that is okay in smaller quantities because your body can handle it, but don't down a bottle or it. I personally am cheap and drink Pernod and Absinte which are basically the same as absinthe but without the wormwood.

If you want the general taste of it, think licorice flavored nyquil. Also it's taste is very bitter (to most people) which is why you usually mix it with something or at least dilute with with cold water slowly dripped over a sugar cube.
