GTI: to buy or not to buy

Well, heres the story, this dude i work with, can't afford to make the payments on his 02 VW GTI, and he's offered to give it to me (he just wants to get ride of it, no profit intended) as long as i continue to make payments (aka take over payments.) this would require me to get a loan for the 11 grand owed.

he still owes a little over 11 grand on it, BUT heres what i have in mind, take his car, sell my current car, (i can get a little over 6 grand for it) pay off 6 grand of it, and owe 5. financed over 4 years that'd be a little more than 150 a month. basicly i'd be getting it for $5k, anyways. if that didn't confuse you and you're still reading,

the only thing is, is that it has almost 60k miles on it, granted about 75% WAS freeway miles, my car now has 52k miles on it.

does it sound stupid to buy a car with more miles that i have on mine now?

4th gen GTI's have always been my dream car, and his is loaded (5spd, leather, upgraded rims, premium sound, heated seats, the whole shebang, it was almost 30 grand new)

or should i just save up and buy one with less miles in like 6 months.

im just so torn because my head tells me no because theres to many miles, but my heart's sayin' yes because its a GTI

discuss.

the mk4 is second only to the mk3 as the ugliest looking golf ever created

they got it right with the r32, but i wouldn't buy an a4 gti with YOUR money

if you really want a mk4 that bad, get a jetta, or save your money and get a mk5 or mk4 r32

how old are you? if you are young insurance and interest will kick you butt. but it sounds like a good deal if you can work it out.
i'll be 19 in january, insurance would be $110 a month (i haven't had any tickets or accidents) and my dad said he'd co-sign for the loan, and he has excellent credit, so intrest shouldn't be that big of an issue

if you like the car i say do it. just make sure you get a buyer for the car you have now so you wont have two car payments.

i'd have to sell it before i got the loan anyways, otherwise id have to re-finance right after i got the loan, and that'd just be a pain in the ***.

5th gen = fugly, and the only jetta i'd get would be a 1.8t, which is the same price as a GTI pretty much

oh but how i'd kill for an r32

have you driven it? if you did, you wouldn't be asking this question, you would be signing the papers. having a car that you really like is a great feeling. personally, the GTI isn't my style, so i got one with the trunk option. what car are you giving up? and you have to factor in the price of a chip (if it's not chipped already).

but can you really afford it? not too many people finance for 4 years on a 4-5 year old car. you will still be paying it off when it is prime time to be putting money towards maintenace.

yes, i've driven it, i love it, its so quick and smooth.

it's already modded a little bit, i know he has coilovers, turbo-back exhaust, chip, lightweight flywheel, new clutch, bigger brakes and a few more little things. im also a little sketched out about that, he did most of the mod's himself

i'd be selling my 2003 taurus, i don't have a carpayment now, because the car was given to me by my grandma, when her doctor told her she couldn't drive anymore.

now i'm leaning twards not buying it, im thinking it has to many miles, and like you said, it'd be kinda dumb, by the time it is payed off i'd have ~125k on it.

im thinking of either buying a used Golf or buying a newer GTI. im just looking for something a little faster and that gets better gas milage than my current car (the best i can get is ~23 mpg)

i like the sexyness of 4 door golfs, but i would love the speed of a gti.

I used to have an 01 Jetta GLX, I loved it. I have an 06 Jetta now, but I actually liked my old one more. It sounds like a good deal, but be careful, MKIV's have big time gremlins. Try like hell to get a warranty of some kind. GL

oh forgot to add it does have the remainder of the 75k mile warranty and it is transferable.
