PEABODY, Massachusetts (AP) -- Police in Peabody, Massachusetts, could be getting holiday pay on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks in what may be a first-of-its-kind contract provision.

A proposed new contract between the city and the police union would make the anniversary a paid holiday. The proposed contract still needs budgetary approval from the city council.

Officers would receive an extra 25 percent pay for working September 11.

Representatives of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers and the International Union of Police Associations told The Salem News they knew of no similar contract provisions in any other city.

The New York Police Department, which lost 23 officers at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, does not recognize the day as a paid holiday.

A union representing 24,000 NYPD officers has tried during contract discussions to get extra pay for anti-terrorism work in the years since the September 11 attack but has been unsuccessful. Patrolmen's Benevolent Association spokesman Al O'Leary said the pay would be more appropriate than extra pay for one day.

No members of the Peabody force were killed on September 11, but some went to New York after the terror attacks to help the city recover

i hate cops with a passion

you know its a law in florida now, they DONT give tickets for an accident unless someones injured? my sister just got in a wreck with some mexicans, 4 of them piled in a single cab s10, no seatbelts, speeding, ran a red light, had witnesses, clearly their fault, NO CAR INSURANCE, and they get no ticket.

WTF, but theyll give me a 91 dollar ticket for tint when i drive the f'n speed limit..........

i see why they ticket you, someone could be holding a gun and in my car or my truck or the yukon, NO one can see through ANY window..also its a harzard at night but honestly im used to it and a safe driver and never gotten in a wreck except a small rear end going like 5mph when i just started driving, not becuase of tint though.

but when they pulled me over, i was doing the speed limit, (it was a speed trap) and the fvcker pulls me over for tint, and in the process, i saw a few cars speed by. im like wtf pull them over you prick..

There is more potential harm in a person speeding than a person with tints. A speeder can kill a lot more people than a guy with tints. He can kill one, maybe two cops; whereas a speeder can wipe out a couple families.

hey if I were an officer there I'd take it. Pretty strange IMO since 9/11 isn't a recognized holiday, but I'm not mad at'm for trying to work the system

A lot of those cops already get 6 figures. MASS are some of the highest paid cops in the country. There was an article about this a while back.

Cops don't make dick here and still live good because its not expensive to live here. Why are you blaming them for a law they did not make, sorry for you sister, but Florida is a no fault state because of all the tourist that visit everyday.

EDIT: Yes its gay that they want more money to work that day and NYPD doesn't even count that as a holiday. Mass cops are the highest paid b/c the cost of living up there is insane other than that I don't see any six figure cops anywhere unless they are high ranking.

Wow I'm glad its going to be a celebration day. One of the biggest, most terrible nation murders is a good thing. That makes sense.
