heres a question for u paint guys. ive been making fiberglass boxes and pieces for about a year now and ive just been using regular spray paint to finish them. im not happy with the result so im looking in to buying a hvlp gravity gun. i dont want to spend alot of money for a hardcore gun cuz im not doing that much painting. i was wondering if anybody could recomend a decent brand gun for around 50$. also where is a good place to buy paint and reducer and all that stuff. thanks guys.

also is there really a big difference between hvlp gravity guns and regular gravity guns? i kno that the hvlp guns are more effiecient but since i only paint fiberglass boxes would a hvlp gun really help me out that much more?

I went to the local Harbor Frieght store and got the $60 gun. They have a cheaper one, but I wanted the bigger one.

More can be seen here......http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Category.taf?CategoryID=324&pricetype= ......they have a lot on sale now.

Yep I with him. Buy all of my paint guns from Harbor freight decent quality guns that get the job done at cheap prices. And yeah I would get a hvlp gun if for no other reason just to save yourself some money. Less paint used, and less overspray. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

yeah im a professional house painter and i use the graco hvlp 3800 series. nice 2 quart cup that you can just set on the floor. and with the gun i can really get into tight areas with very minimal overspray. im not sure of the cost of the gun but comes with a selection of pistons and nozzles. not a fan of the gravity-fed, but if you are trying to keep it cheap then go with whats on sale. i saw that lowe's had a sale on grav-fed guns this weekend. what are you using for your air setup? air compressor? turbine?

im also lookin at air compresseors, ill probly get a pretty small one cuz all im gunna be doin with it is painting. im still learing about all the specs on the different air compressors. is there any one compressor yall suggest?

just about anything that will do 50+PSI. Get a dual 5gal setup. brand is not important as long as you have very consistent pressure all the time. just want to keep that flow even so you end up with a nice spray pattern.

And make sure you get an air dryer. Nothing will ruin a beautiful paint job liek water in your sprayer. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

This might be somewhat pertinent to this, but I'm painting a 91 honda civic with Krylon white spray paint, mostly on a dare that I could'nt get it to look better than this one kid who painted his car with red Menards enamel. His has drips and runsand overspray on the trim and stuff, pretty bad, but it is glossy. My paintjob is cloudy and rough, even after multiple coats, sanding etc. Any help? I have no runs, but it just wont shine evenly!

noting will make a paint job get that glossy finish you are looking for except for clear coat. and im so sorry that you used krylon, even on a dare that is really sad that you did that to your car.

There's no such thing as a "good" HVLP spray gun for $50. You can get by with Harbor Freight or Home Depot guns if you only need to do a couple things and aren't real critical of the results, or if you have lots of time and don't mind sanding and respraying when your gun screws up. Think of it like a Pyramid or Pyle amp... yeah, they work and they're cheap.

I use one of these for small items:

This one is also good:

One of these for larger items, with a small compressor:

HVLP guns save materials by having less overspray. The downside is that they use air faster (more flow, not pressure). Get the biggest compressor you can afford, you'll never regret it. The 5-6 HP 25-30 gal portable units will handle small HVLP touchup guns and even air tools.

yea i would go with the biggest one that you can afford, and its an added bonus if you can use your air tools on it. thats actually what i plan on doing. one nice compressor, a lot of air tools= happiness
