Got a virus bad, tried spybot, wont work. HELP!

This is what I get for letting my little sister use the computer...

Its this virus that will pop up internet screens saying I have viruses infected in these files, and lists some files, and then says click here to get rid of them. I dont click of course. It will also popup random games and DL them onto my desktop.

I tried spybot in safemode, and regular, and it dont work.

I think its a registry key, because when I did spybot in safemode it said it found a registry key. HKEY something..

HELP

From my personal experience, I get best results when I run more than one.

Typically I run Ad-Aware, then Spybot, then X-Cleaner....usually works pretty well. If all else fails though, just backup everything and reformat.

Ack... Format is a huge step from just running a few little programs... Do some research on the virus, most places have directions on how to manually remove them if they are being stubborn. You should never have to format unless it cripples your computer past booting - which most don't.

This brings up a good point though that should be asked - why aren't you running updated anti-virus software and a firewall? IMHO, one of the most critical things you can get.

You are on a cable or DSL connection I'm assuming - most seem to be?

Well I tried to update spybot and nothing happened. I also have Avast! virus thing.

Im on cable. The reason I dont have alotta these softwares is because I visit the same sites, and I have never gotten viruses from these before. I don't go to porn places and I rarely go to places other then these forums, so I just never really needed stuff.

I've never dealt with the Avast software, so I guess I can't speak for that - I've always run Symantec products, with Mcafee being a close second.

I think you can get a trial download of both companies products, perhaps you should look into it and see if you can get one of them installed and have it run through the needed testing.

If you like it, find a way to spring for it, or hell - kiss up to 'rents or the relatives until they pitch in. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

um. prevent?

MOZILLA FIREFOX

download that and...

NEVER USE INTERNET EXPLORER AGAIN! ITS THE MAIN REASON FOR ALL THESE **** SPYWARE COMPANIES ANYWAY!

install it, and only use IE if you MUST.. some things wont work in firefox, but 99% will.

ive not had one popup SINCE ive installed this. but you still gotta get rid of that virus\spyware before this will help you fix that problem, but this will prevent these problems in the future.

wow there are a lo of replies here and i havent read them all. ive been doing pc work for 6-7 years now and i work at a pc store. 80% of our work is strictly spyware related. the order i usually use is ...

adaware and avg antivirus scan

spybot

hijackthis

hijackthis is more advanced and you seem unfirmiliar with the windows registry. i wouldnt recommend using it unsupervised :p if u post a hikackthis log ill go thru it for you. always keep an antivirus. AVG is a good free one from grisoft.com. since your on broadband, it recommend a firewall as well. if you have XP make sure to atleast enable your windows firewall and make sure they arent any open ports that you didnt manually set. service pack 2 has a nice popup blocker which rids a lot of new spyware.

i highly suggest hijackthis if the stuff keeps recurring. adaware doesnt do a good job at registry scans. spybot does a more in depth job and shows you startup items moreso than msconfig. msconfig merely reads the registry keys in the RUN folder, not the deleted items from the run folder stored in run runex sometimes.

good luck
