got 150x2 to work with, thinking about a speaker upgrade

Hey everyone.

My current speakers are boston SL60's and im running them 150x2 with a JL 300/4.

I see very few recommendations for that speaker, so I am assuming it is not really all that great. Ive heard great things about the pro60's, however ive also heard they are very power hungry and I dont know if 150w is sufficient to power them.

Any suggestions for another speaker in the SL60 pricerange that might take a little more advantage of having 150w?

Curious to know why you are not happy with the sl60. I like the old Boston rally components but cant seem to find any. I also have 150x2 watts to work with and im looking for an upgrade in the 200 dollar price range.

A true 150x2 is enough for almost any midrange or tweeter, and is certainly more than enough to run your current set up. If you really want to get the most out of your front stage, the best thing to do is to go active. Do that before you replace you SL60s. Where do you have these mounted? Proper speaker placement is also a key factor in front stage performance.

I too would like to know what it is about your Boston SL60s that you don't like. Just because poeple arnt making recomendations about something does not mean that it isn't a good product.

It sounds very clear and for softer/acoustic stuff like dave matthews band it sounds amazing. But really heavy stuff with alot of guitar distortion (like tool) it just seems to lack something. It gets quite loud but it doesnt sound like it has enough "power" and just doesnt sound very realistic. Maybe it just doesnt have enough midbass but I'm not really sure. I bought some eDead its sitting here, once it stops raining I'll install it and maybe that will help some.

The speaker is in the stock location of my car which is the very bottom forward corner of the door. Unfortunatly my car really limits what I can do with the speaker installation (ive got a 1993 MR2).

I don't think the problem is with your speakers per say, it's how you have them installed. Once you properly deaden and seal your doors you will notice more midbass ouput. The power application seems fine to me and you have nice amp on them.

I listen to Tool a lot in my testing because there is so much distortion and reverb that it's a challenge to get it to sound right....but once you get it right Maynard comes right out of your speakers and kicks you in the nutz //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

If you do go to the Pro60's, you will might feel the need for additional power to really make them shine. I have heard some guys running 300+ rms per side and still claim that they want more.

x2 on the install, give them a fair shot after the edead and them make your final judgement. You should see the midbass appear and better response.

Going active would make the front stage more efficient and would give you more dynamic headroom + flexability.

Deadening would improve on responce and midbass.

Choosing a better location or altering the position of the speakers to get them more on axis and/or obtain more equal pathlengths would make an improvement in imaging.

Work on this before you look for another set of speakers.

i cant agree more. get the most that you can out of your current setup before you choose to get rid of them, but if you are still unhappy then go to some that we mentioned.

Well I deadened my doors and added deflex pads behind the speaker but its still noticably lacking in the midbass area. Certainly better than it was before though. I think I'm going to live with it for the time being. I dont want to go ahead and spend 250 dollars on new speakers for it still to not sound the way I want it. Part of the problem is I still think my tweeters are too loud. Its set all the way down on my crossover, but if you look at the position the tweeters are about head level facing into the cabin while the main speakers are way down low near my feet. I guess an active crossover should be next on my list.

how much deadener did you use ? seal up any of the large openings ? my buddy has those sl60's running active and its pretty nice.

when i went from passives to active on my old set of bostons it was like night and day difference. on the alpine hu i was using it has an active xover and being able tp have so much control is nice everything from the xover point and slope and the level is made from the hu.
