gop debate

Basically when Muhammad died, some muslims wanted to elect the leader of the faith and some believe it should go to family member.

Not much differnt then Catholic vs. Protestants... Does the Pope lead the church or the bible and a man's interpretation of it...

I'm a registered Democrat but would vote Republican before I vote for Hillary or Obama. Romney and Biden are probably my favorites so far, but they both have a long way to go.

"This week, all the Republican candidates will be coming to California to debate each other at the Reagan Library. The winner will then be selected by Exxon-Mobil."

---Jay Leno

"The Republican presidential debate was held tonight in California, and ten candidates took part. Political experts say that the ten Republican candidates represented all races, creeds, and colors of rich white men."

---Conan O'Brien

"Four years ago, the president stood on the deck of an aircraft carrier and announced 'Mission Accomplished.' Two years later, the president appointed one of the main architects of that mission, Paul Wolfowitz, to head the World Bank. Because when someone has been completely wrong about everything, ya gotta put him where he can't do any harm...like in charge of the world's poor."

---Jon Stewart

"Former CIA director George Tenet has a new book where he says there was no serious debate within the administration about going into Iraq. It'll hit the stores on Monday, under the title: No Shit."

---Bill Maher

I don't want to even begin going into the details of how wrong you are, but here is a quote from the link you posted...

"Sunni Muslims make up the majority (85%) of Muslims all over the world. Significant populations of Shia Muslims can be found in Iran and Iraq, and large minority communities in Yemen, Bahrain, Syria, and Lebanon."

Honestly, whether or not you are Sunni / Shi'a has nothing to do with whether you are Persian or Arab.

My bad I switched the two... most Persians are Shia and most Arabs are Sunni.

I wasn't trying to state causation of race and Islam sects but more correlation. Just as you would say Italians & Spaniards are Catholic and Germans & English are Protestants. Not causation but more correlation due to the geographical influences in religion.

Shias believe in an Imam or Caliph as their religious guidance similar to Catholics due for the Pope.

Sunni are less centralized structure with many holy men and prophets, similar to protestants with the bishop system (Methodist, Baptist, Prep., etc...)

This may be a good read...

Actually I do know quite a bit as 2 of my good friends from College in Miami are from Syria and Lebanon. My fiancé is Indian so I also have alot of exposure to the Hindu religion as well.

Ok...I was about to say.

You're on the right path, although the basic concept of the Khaliph or Imam (which really just means prayer leader) aren't that different between the divisions. An implementation of an Islamic state in any general sense would call for a Khaliph of some sort, the difference is who actually becomes it. Basic Sunni principle is based around the concept of shura and bay'a which is the consultation of the majority to approve a qualified leader and then the following pledge to follow / uphold that leader, like a democracy. The basic Shi'a principle calls for that Khaliph to be within the lineage of the prophet (its actually not directly but through his clan of qureysh) and also places a large amount of power within the ulema (see khomeinis velayat e fiqh) to govern. its a shit ton more complicated than that but, anyway...

btw im a arabic & islamic studies pre-bac student now getting a degree in mid-east diplomacy.
