Good Bday Present?

Hey guys, so i need some (cheap) opinions.. Basically my bestfriends birthday is coming up and he needs a gift from the audio gods... right now he's running a 50 doller kenwood sub in a prefab sealed box and a sony 400 watt amp and its just not doin the trick.. now its his bday.. its not lets take out a loan to buy him a present day...

basically i was thinking of this

Buying him a 12" Type R and nabbing a prefab ported box ( i know prefabs are shunned upon.. but if its built right, and to the right volume specs it cant be THAT bad )

Would this be a acceptable thing to do? i figure anythings a upgrade from his 50 doller kenwood system, and i figured a 12" Type R's a pretty **** good upgrade especially in a ported box instead of his circuit city sealed ones.. he's gonna be keeping his amp im pretty sure.. and the RMS on the Type R is 500.. and is amp puts out 400 watts so it shouldent be that far off to atleast get it moving and sounding better / louder?

i couldent build a box to save my life.. im not buying a prefab at BB or Circuit City.. im talking like the quality ones from like woofersetc yada yada.. that use 3/4 mdf and actually tell you the port tuning and internal volume etc etc

whats your budget do we can come up with stuff?

with out knowing a budget id say buy/build him a box for the kenwood and then get him some cheap comps/amp

Maybe i should just buy him the sub? The box he has for his kenwood is a 2 cube sealed box.. it'd work well the the R im thinking

Cheap.. like 150 bones.. hence the R which i can jack for 110 and will work good with his 400 watt amp

Again, sorry for the low price but im broke as a mother****er.. and im putting my Bestfriend before myself.. seeing as i dont even have subs in my car in the first place, and instead of spending my money to buy myself something.. im spending it to upgrade his already existant system

i've spent 400 on a friends b-day before. then again it was his 21st and i threw and hosted the kegger. 3 kegs and 9 bottles of liquor add up man.

hes a good friend.. hes been through alot of shit w/ me and hes a certified mechanic so i pretty much get all my car shit done for free and 5 finger discounts so i thought ide repay him

I got it all planned out... i have a spare key to his car so i thought ide have his girlfriend take him out to the mall or whatever for afew hours and ride in her car, and then ide come over and swap out his subs for the type R / ported box setup.. and then when he gets back ill say that my Bday present to him was a new CD which i would burn full of like bass i love you and abunch of other bass happy songs and give him a demo and he'll be like WTF then pop the trunk thinkin his kenwoods on crack and boom bang, new shit

ok now that's a lot of effort to go through lol. all my effort was myspace bulletin for invite, call my friend who's manager of liquor store, await delivery.
