The majority of us here use MDF to which I will say, that glue would be sufficient enough. MDF is actually somewhat weak. Just like a weld, the strongest part of the structure will be the bonding joint, the weld itself or in this case the glue. Try it, > just get two random pieces of wood (scrap) and glue the straight edge of one to the other, clamp, let dry. Then take the 2 and bend them at the joint, 9/10 times the wood itself will split, not the glue joint. Also note, use wood glue, not just some random glue. People often do that too.
Me, I use a nail gun, and wood glue the outer edge of the joint/seam (from center to edge) and put silicone on the inner edge of the joint/seam (very edge). I've never had any leaks and or weak points. As an added securement, I glass the inside all over too. I just started doing this about 5 years back. I only use screws on odd angles and potential weak points. This approach is much faster too.
