hi everyone who remembers me.

i recently decided that im going to build an ipod dock with charging and unamped line out for my 80gb ipod video, to my 1997 toyota camry

basically i would greatly appreciate pointers on how to paint this. i have a cover for the ipod connector in the middle, so don't worry about that.

i haven't yet body filled it but that's what i intend on doing today.

i'm looking to have a finish that is not glossy but flat (and i have appropriately purchased "RUST-OLEUM Flat Protective Enamel")

basically, the main questions are:

with what grit should i sand the last layer of body filler?

how many coats of primer and how long between them?

which coats of primer do i sand and with which grits?

how many coats of paint and how long between them?

which coats of paint do i sand and with which grits?

being that it's not going High Gloss with clearcoat, your task is pretty easy.

1. what grit should i sand the last layer of body filler?

----150ish should be good enough. 220ish if you're anal, but it won't really matter

2. how many coats of primer and how long between them?

---- usually 3 coats is sufficient. put two coats on, sand it down, and if bondo shows knock that bondo down a little then put one decent coat of primer back on and final sand that. how long inbetween them? 5 minutes should be more than enough if it's a fast drying primer like water or laquer based. if it's urethane based, read the directions, it could all depend on how much activator/reducer you use, but i'm assuming based on your lack of knowledge it's like spray paint primer or something, which is most likely water or laquer based...

3. which coats of primer do i sand and with which grits.

----it's only really necessary to sand the second coat. then if you do what i said above and you need a third coat, sand that one. no need to sand the first coat because you'll be covering it with the second coat almost right away. which grits? i'd say with what you're trying to accomplish, 400ish would be sufficient.

4. how many coats of paint and how long between them?

---- do a test strip, on a black and white piece of paper, and see how many coats it takes to completely cover both colors until you cant see anything but your color. if you can't find a test strip like this, then usually 3 is fine, and four will most definately do it unless you coat them really lightly. as for how long between them, wait a couple minutes for them to flash dry, then start over. just wait until it doesn't look wet anymore.

5. which coats of paint do i sand and with which grits?

---- seeing as how you're doing a flat matte paint, it's not necessary to sand any of the paint.

this is just how any one of the sign and display shops or body shops i worked at would do it. all of that wetsanding and buffing and such is pretty much saved for basecoat/clearcoat that has to look pristine, i.e a show car or really dark color...

that's just how I would do it, and have been doing it for about the last 4 years without any problems.

Thanks a lot for the help. I've followed your steps so far and right now the primer is drying (Since about 24 hours ago indoors). It's still a bit sticky.
I'm going to sand tomorrow and then determine if there's anywhere that I need to add more primer. Thanks again.
