Gainesville, FL anyone?

Well I'm going to be moving to Gainesville, FL after I graduate college and I was wondering if anyone that lives there could shed some light on some things. I live in NJ now so there's quite a bit of job opportunities that arise, but I heard Gainesville is a collegetown (UF) and the job market isn't great there. Is it close to any big cities that would have some good opportunities? I'm in IT, by the way.

I hear it's cheap to live there, but I'm afraid I'm going to have a very difficult time finding a job. So what's it like? And if you have any other things to add about Gainesville that are good to know, that'd be great thanks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Don't move to Gainesville... it is a college town. If you want to move to Northern-ish Florida... move to Jacksonville. My friend is renting a nice *** apartment, I think 2 bedroom 1 bath for 500 a month. He also said that the job market is really good up there.

If not Jacksonville, try Orlando. I don't know much past state lines, though.

Well, unfortunately I'm moving there because my fiance is going to UF for her Phd. She'll be there for about 7 years, so it's a tough situation. I'm hoping an hour and a half to 2 hour commute to Jacksonville isn't my only option for work //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

I'm not happy at all right now about moving there, but I'm going to support her because she really really wants to pursue her Phd.

Pick somewhere besides Gainesville if you can. It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere also.
Yeah... I stayed at my friend's dorm for a week or so... and nothing was close to the campus with in 5 miles... but even where the bus dropped me off (I took a Greyhound), everything was very small town-esque. It's not a place I'd like to live as an adult and not a college student.

x2 I hate that place... I say move to J-Ville and just see each other on the weekends, it's only an hour or so away and that bish is gonna be mad busy once she gets to Grad School

So... either my math is off (which it isn't) and either you aren't going to school, or you're older than her. If you've graduated college and she's a freshman in college... that would make her around 18-19, and you around 22-23... which just makes you kind of creepy. Especially considering that if you've been dating her long enough to consider moving, it means you were an official pedo for at least a year. But if you aren't going to school... you're just a tool. Your ideal job is manager at a fast food place... seriously, go to school.

And don't move somewhere for a girl... it's the worst mistake you can ever make.

lol dude. I understand what you're saying, HOWEVER you didn't read my posts correctly.

I am in my last semester of COLLEGE at Rutgers University. She graduated Rutgers University and is going for her PHD DOCTORATE PROGRAM at University of Florida.

We both will have earned bachelor's degrees, I am 22 she is 23. I will not be going to school there, I will be working on several certifications within IT.

You may disagree with my personal decision moving in with her, but that's not what this thread is about. We are planning on getting married, and we have no doubts about it so those opinions are irrelevant. So yes, your math is off.

Oh, reading > me.

Since when does it take 7 years from bachelors to Doctorate...? A friend of mine is doing a 4 year Doctorate program... he's 16 btw. Freshman in college as of last summer. He's a genius, though. Don't feel stupid.

Besides, it takes 7 years from Freshman, usually. Depending on what she's studying and what her class load will be. But with a 4-5 class load, it shouldn't take 7 years. Should either take 2-3 years, or 4-5 years, depending on her courses before.

And as for my opinion... It doesn't matter. I'm just giving you advice. I know a lot of people (mainly my friend's parents/my old teachers) who moved down here for a boyfriend / girlfriend, and they regret it.)

Well, it's for English. For English PHds, people can rush through it in 5 years, but it's difficult with the dissertation and everything. You get your masters first, which takes 2-3 years then do your dissertation. People who go the normal route usually take 6-7 years, depending the amount of research and everything.

And jeez, 16 and a doctorate program? WTF lol

Mine moved for me, we lived together and broke up within a month (dating for 1.5 yrs)... horrible idea

He's a genius... he's a dick. But, he's smart.

Yeah I see where your coming from, I've seen this happen to. But you can't go comparing every relationship to another, because every bond is different. We've been together for almost 4 years and marriage plans are in the works. Simple as that. I've made a decision to support her in something she really wants, and I'm fine in doing it because she'd do the same for me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif.

I appreciate the concern though hehe.

We also lived together for a year so we know eachothers habits =P
