NORTON — Police said two men suffered second-degree burns to the hands, arms and face early this morning in an explosion off South Worcester Street.
Michael Fillion, 26, and Shaun Brown, 24, were taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence by the Norton Fire Department, said police Detective Lt. Thomas Peterson.
Police Sgt. Robert Whitfield and patrolmen James Cameron and Rachel Samuelson were sent to 195 South Worcester St. at 1:30 a.m. Monday to investigate a report of an explosion.
Police found Fillion with multiple burns. Fillion told them he and Brown had been sitting in Fillion’s Jeep Wrangler, drinking beer in the woods, when Fillion lit a cigarette and a can of black powder exploded.
Officials located a small can of black powder in the rear of vehicle, which had extensive damage in the passenger compartment.
Police said Brown was found about 250 yards southwest of the train tracks to the rear of 195 South Worcester St. in a heavily wooded area. It appeared the men had some type of campfire, police said.
The incident is being investigated by Norton police Detective Todd Bramwell and Trooper Tom Berletti of the state fire marshal’s office.
