IDE/PATA is an older interface than SATA the difference being different transfer rates. SATA is newer technology and has up to a 3.0 gb/s transfer rate. I don't remember the transfer rate of IDE/PATA but its significantly less. Based on This Review of a dell dimension 8400 your computer is capable of handling another RAID configuration.Sorry again noob question, what are advantages to IDE/PATA over SATA and disadvantages also. Assuming both would be compatable with my dell dimension 8400. Sorry im really interested but I have no clue the difference, I know about cars not computers.
I just had to increase my storage capacity recently too. Just put 4 320GB drive in Raid 5. I need redudancy for piece of mind. it only totals out to 900GB after the parity takes up its share. Good enough for now, but I am looking to get another RAID 5 going here soon in the server.LOL cant even begin to compute how long it took me to back up my movie collection on these.
I started with the ISO format thinking I would never run out of space, but I did, Then I started converting to AVI and that took about 1.5 hours per movie on my dual core pc.
Lets just say it took a long time, but it is worth it not to have to get up, look for a particular movie and put it in the dvd player. Now I just click a few buttons on my modded xbox and the movie streams right to my tv![]()
