how does someone fry the MOSFET?

voltage drops, reversed wiring, gain. Many things can do it but my bet would be on Voltage drops. I bet you could fix that for around $60 or less. Depends on how many FETS are blown, and how much each FET cost. If you are any good at soldering try reading the # of the FET and replace them your self.
