Free oscilloscope?

Junk. The speaker on your phone isnt designed as a high fidelity device to detect things like distortion.

Wouldnt a mic plug in to the external mic input on the phone?

Scopes arent meant for measuring sound waves they measure electrical signals hooking a mic is pointless but voltage into mic plug might be measurable and displayable

To properly use the free apps you need to buy the tools associated with it. They do make probes that connect through the ports on iPhone and droids. Thus making them no longer free and most of the time more expensive then some of the newer o scopes.
