PC modding sites have sold LEDs and cathode lights that respond to sound for a long time. If you want to do this and wiring it into your amp doesn't work, you might want to look into something like this:

And a molex to car 12v adapter, like this:

Not 100% sure if it'll work, but it should. My car has 12v plug in the trunk. If yours does too, this would be extremely easy hook up.
