i have a 1 carat ring and it was appraised at just over $7k. depending on cut and clarity it could be worth $2k-$20k

i am thinking of selling the expensive diamond and replacing it with a less expensive one and pocketing the difference

If a pawn shop was willing to unass a grand for the ring then it must have been worth a mint. Pawn shops normally will give you a very minimal percentage of an item's actual value (which is why pawn shop owners make so much freggin' money per annum)
