Forward or Backwards?

Does it matter which direction you install your subs? I have mine pointing towards the front in my Cougar, and my friend insists that it'd sound better if reversed. Certain notes my subs hit do seem to vibrate my cars frame making a lot of extra unnecessary noise.. Not sure if switching the directions of my subs will fix it or dynamat or it's just my subs flaw.. Any preference?

Also: while adjusting my sub volume from my head unit, I have the option to put it at 0 degrees or 180 degrees.. What's the difference?
