Ford Alterrnators - Swap front part of case??

Ok so i was looking at an alt, for like an explorer or something, and someone posted saying you can remove the front part of the case, that has the mounting tabs or whatever on it, and use it on a different vehicle. Is this true? It looked like it would work, but i am not positive without seeing it in person or actually trying it.

Also, what kind of a alt would a 1993 Lincoln continental have? Its the same alt as the 92 and similar year taurus'

I really dont even know what the differences are, ive seen alot of posts say like 3g, 4g etc. Can someone briefly explain what the differences are on those?
