Microsoft's Piracy Check

SEATTLE (AP) -- Microsoft's drawing complaints and lawsuits over

the way it checks for pirated copies of its Windows operating

system.

Eighteen months after announcing the piracy check, Microsoft

faces controversy and backlash, including two lawsuits.

While Microsoft had told users the new software would gather

information related to piracy, some people became alarmed when they

discovered the software also was performing a daily check-in with

the company. Microsoft has since discontinued the daily check and

revised its disclosures.

But critics saw the undisclosed communications as a breach of

privacy and trust. Microsoft faces two federal lawsuits over the

software, both of which accuse the company of violating laws that

seek to combat spyware. The lawsuits seek class-action status.

man, everythime I start my comp up it asks me to get genuine or continue or something and it gets annoying

lets say if you call them up and say you comp crashed and windows wont except the key code...but in real life it didnt crash??is that still counted as a bootleg copy? ...=0...well i would never do that...=]

They'd probably tell you to reformat and try again.

The key registers hardware (probably either the HD or the chip serials or something) in the MS database. That way, if you try installing it on another machine, it won't work. You have to actually call them up and tell them you are NOT using the copy on your old machine, and are instead using it on the new machine. If you keep re-installing it on the same machine, however, it will work just fine.

hence why ghosted images of your windows install and restore CDs work.

i format a lot so my key doesnt work anymore so i have to call em up and get a code from them each time i install windows.

same for me u just call and give them the code and u get a new windows key and they ask u some questions

i forget what the file was but if you delete it and shut off the computer you can put it in another computer....it like detects the new hardware and thinks it the original, so it saves the new hardware and have windows on a new comp

if you do this you will be fine running the 2 computers off of the same disc, my suggestion is turn off auto updates on the originall one and if you have a firewall block the port it is using on your computer so you dont have to worry about being caught //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

are there some keys or versions of xp that dont require activation? cause the ones i use at work dont...
