For those experienced SQ folks

For those on here who are on the high end of SQ and have been doing this for a long time (as a competitor), what are your opinions on having less experienced judges listen to your car?

I am in the process of becoming an IASCA judge, and I can definitely handle being an install and IdBL judge. I am however, less experienced as a listener and am unsure how this would be accepted at shows. I am more referring to shows on a local level, not so much TKE events or finals, but if you were to come to a show, and you had a judge that had less experienced ears than yourself, what would you think? I am not saying I am not qualified to do the listening tests, I am just less experienced than I think many pro competitors would be...

Thoughts, comments?

Canadians can't do any wrong... I love you guys //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Just gain experince as you go. Thats' what we all do, and we all have to start somewhere.

Anybody else have an opinion on the matter?

find a listening room that has some of the top components for a home theatre. Something that costs more than 25k all said and done would be great.

take the CD that is used as judging material and play it on that system OVER and OVER and OVER untill you know what it should sound like by heart.

Once you've got that down. Take it home and listen to it there. and in your car. Critique what you hear and the things that are lacking. You should also get a frequency test CD that will let you listen to what specific frequencies sound like.

Fine tuning your ears takes time and experience. Listen to other judges, talk about the minutiae, the subtleties, try to feed off of their experience. Having a stellar reference system as a means of comparison is also always very useful. Just because someone has more experience in listening doesn't necessarily mean that they'll be better at it.

The cheapest way to have an excellent reference system is probably a good headphone set up at home. Try something from Grado headphones, like an RS-1 or RS-2. Get the amp that comes with them, and use very good source material.

Ultimately train your ears to look for what the Grados show you, in cars.

Hey, can an Olympic figure skating judge do a triple axel better than the actual skater? No, but they are still the judge and the skater has to impress them.

If you qualify to be a judge, then the competitors have to impress you, not what build a system that they think sounds good.

your right about the headphone thing, even a cheap set tends to sound better than most car setups, headphones are like having a perfect install. A nice set of headphones are technically better than basically any car setup, they just lack some of the impact.
