Foam VS Rubber surround likes and dis likes

they do make foam rubber.

Older type foam surrounds had varying elasticity and tensions depending on how warm they got with movement, and how far they were stretched. This is very bad. The longer you would play the subs, the more likely excursion will not be linear and distortion or damage will occur.

The older foam also deteriorated and dried out after a while of use.

The new type treated foam surrounds are multilayered and stronger.

My fi q was a foam surround and it had 28mm of xmax. So there can definitely be subs with foam surrounds and high amounts of excursion.
Yes, Fi uses newer type multi layer foam that works quite well. I believe it is a foam rubber.

Not the older type foam I was speaking of. The older type I speak of is like the orange expanded foam surrounds used on Cerwin Vega XL woofers.

actually older rubber surrounds were kind of bad too. The newer ones are much better.

But new foam surrounds are treated and multilayer. This certainly helps with strength and integrity.

Most of my high end subs use a type of foam rubber whereas the lower end subs I have use rubber.
