Foam baffles affect SQ?

Tomorrow, I'll finally put the XS65 I picked up to replace the db6501s I've been using. To protect the dbs from moisture, I have a foam baffle sitting in there. Supposedly they are good for midbass but I can't say I notice a difference.

I would like to continue protecting the XS65 with these baffles but also want to ensure I maximize SQ (doors to be deadened with Raammat and Ensolite as soon as winter passes).

Should I cut a hole in them or are they good? Again, they're foam, not plastic.

your talking about these yes?

You dont want those. No need. Midbass is created from having a good enclosure. you want to seal your door and make it the enclosure. Those foam baffles are just kinda water protection for bad environments or really crap old trunks. Take out the baffles. They also suffocate your speakers and make them sound muffled

are you referring to those xtc baffles? if so, ive always cut the back out of em. running them stock has resulted in horrid midbass response.

Suffocate your speaker? Have you tested this yourself?

I ask only because i'd think if they would were left intact, and sealed completely, it would give a Aperiodic enclosure type effect. I can't see that having any negative effect, especially if your speaker has a low QTS.

Would the benefit or negative effect possibly be speaker dependent? I really don't image it making much deference ether way, but i would like to know more.

its muffled as hell with bad resonances most of the times. the baffle is just not big enough for the speaker to work well like it would in a low qts enclosure. You usually get a large nasty spike in the 150-315hz range. I didnt put it in a door but i've benched tested it outside of a door, returned it asap.

which wouldnt be a bad idea if you were running midranges in your door or in a kickpanel.
I used them in the last car for a 6.5. I glassed the inside but I'm my case that 6.5 wasn't going under 300hz. I had to separate it from the dedicated midbass that would have ripped it apart.

Good to know. Thanks

I plan on sealed enclosures for my door drivers. But my plans always take a lot longer than they should. I was going to put some XTC baffles back there for some moisture protection until i can get to it. It looks like im better off just getting those sealed enclosures done.

Post pics if you do the sealed enclosure

There cannot be an aperiodic effect because CCF isn't porous. Aperiodic membranes allow passage of air.

XTC baffles are a lossy enclosure that is undersized. Their usage requires the rear of the baffle removed.
