Flaring PVC

Yeah I noticed. After about 15 mins the pvc was barely warm. I dont know that I could heat a 6" pipe enough all around to get it started... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif Any other suggestions on how to get it heated? Maybe boiling water? (Think I've read that someone used this method, dont know if it was sch 40 pipe though.)

I actually had better success with the heat gun that with boiling water. I saw someone used hot oil (like a turkey fryer) you can get the oil a lot hotter than water. Obviously you need to use caution doing this, but would prob be the easiest.

Lol I dont think I want to try the hot oil! Dont know if it was my heat gun or what, but it didnt seem like I could ever get it heated evenly all the way around before it cooled too much. I'm looking in to making fiberglass flares at the moment. I think this would be the "easiest" method and you can control the flare a lot better.

If you have a propane tank you can use this method. You can buy a weed burner attachment at home depot, lowes, menards etc. This attaches to the propane tank and you pretty much have a torch. We use this method on schedule 40 and 80 pvc. I know it works because we use this method when bending pvc for underground installation in the electrical field. I have never tryed to flare the pvc with it, but it does get hot enough to bend schedule 40 and 80 into a 90 degree bend/sweep.

Harbor Freight sells heat guns for like $12, I would probably get 2 or 3 then (with some help) just try and get that bisch hot enough...it's plastic so eventually it's gotta get soft right?

Great ideas...but they are not cost effective in my situation. If I were making multiple flares over and over it would make sense to spend $50+, but for flares for 1 enclosure, I could just purchase a precision port for around the same price. I was looking for an easy, cost effective (free really) solution since I already had the 6" sch40 pvc that I got for free. Thanks for the suggestions!
