Flaring PVC with heatgun?

So i'm always keen for an alternative/moneysaving way of doing things, does anyone use PVC ports and simply flare them out with a heat gun and a work glove by hand? Would it work?

My brother did a couple once he just used a bowl on top and heated and pushed.
