FIBERGLASS - Online for cheap?? Want THICK

Well yeah Im not looking to go cheap on the thickness, shits just balls expensive in my area

Found that 24 oz mat 38" wide for $9/yard + 63 shipping for 25 yards

Hoping I can get cheaper possibly though

thin layers are easier to apply, thick requires less layers. if you are experienced with fg then you can go thick but if not thin is easier to apply. either way you have to have enough layers so that it will not flex. if you can stand on it with no flex (and weight 150-200lbs) it is strong enough.
that being said, based on your needs (3k+ of power) i would layer it up until you though it was thick enough and then add at least another 1/4"-3/8" on top of that.
Well yeah Ive only made one fiberglass box before, but for 2 12's sealed. This box will be built inside the car and wont be able to be removed to test strength, so Ill probly just overdo it, then fiberglass in some crossbracing and such (since i wont be able to access sides)

Ive had 15+ boxes in this car, I want to build this one right, and have it be my last ever, just change equipment if I ever have to. Tune the box in the low 30's with 3 8" aeros, plug one areo to get a tune in the 40's. Just have to do the math

Is there a technique to bonding MDF to fiberglass, like the overlapping joint, anyway to make that strong so it doesnt seperate? Possibly do a few layers, and screw threw the fiebrglass and the wood to secure it, then more fiberglass..... I dunno

Keep in mind that accordind to the venereble Wayne Harris(founder of DB drag racing), 1/8" of fg is the same accoustically as 3/4" mdf. That being said remember that if you are actually moulding to the contours of your very shapely vehicle, the metal will provide the equivelent of 3/4" of fg(assuming it has been sound deadened with a reputable material).

With a system as you describe, it couldnt hurt to double up the mdf or atleast soak it with resin( mdf breathes, which hurts spl).

Going to be building a new box soon, and instead of building a basic square between the wheel wells like I always do, Id like to go over my wheel wells and general weird shape of the sides of my car, and get all the possible air space a possible and make it mostly out of fiberglass.
The front baffle, bottom, rear and top, most likely will be MDF, but the sides will be full fiberglass, and then the entire thing lined with glass 1-2 layers.

Is there a cheap online source for mat? I only have some thin chop mat available locally, and its like $8/yard. Ive already found cheaper on ebay.

But I dont know if I should simply buy TONS of thin stuff (6oz mat) or if I should buy somer like 24oz thick *** matt. I dont know how many layers I will need to get sufficient strength.

Anybody have a source, or a suggestion, possible idea how ammount of glass needed. I can get resin for $40/gallon local, and shipping would **** on a can to canada, so Ill probly just stick to local for that.

Thanks for any help
You will need to do more than 1-2 layers. It will be to thin and crack. You will want to do anywhere from 6-8 layers. You can buy bulk packs of mat that comes in 20-60 square yards. As far as the matt goes you will want to use 6oz because it will contour much eaiser to the wheel wells than a much heaver matt will making less work for you.

For the 2 layers, I meant 2 layers to line the entire box once its finished. As I said the front back top and bottom will be MDF. And the sides will be thick *** fiberglass, but I meant Ill coat the entire inside of the box when I think Ive got it structurally sound

Any suggestions to mating the MDF to the glass other than just laying it overtop though?

Go with 6oz eh, Im gonna be to buy ALOT!!

Like I found this stuff on ebay. 18oz mat, 10lbs of it for $14 + shipping. How much would 10lbs be in yards? 18oz would be THICK right?

http://cgi.ebay.ca/10-lb-FIBERGLASS-18-oz-Woven-Roven-Cloth-Repairs-Epoxy_W0QQitemZ370226512910QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item563338440e&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1215|293%3A1|294%3A50

Ive got a bunch of regular fiberglass at home, like 3oz probably. I could make the initial layer and mould out of that, then just keep lining the insides to buildup with this 18oz mat? The surfaces would be vertical in some places, and even hanging in some points connecting to the top of the box, would the fiberglass stay in place?

I figured that deal above was good, when I sen this 10oz mat selling for $10 per yard. Id imagine there would be quite a few yards in the 10lb box so the first link would be the better deal.

Need some opinions

I would suggest using biaxial mats. It is mat and cloth stitched together. Builds super fast, and if you lay it up correctly ( switching the bias 90 degrees each successive layer ) you can park a car on three layers of it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I actually found a vendor less than 20 min away that sells 18oz mat for $7/yard

Does anyone have experience with 18oz mat? Would it be ok to use?

This is there description of it:

"18 oz, 50 inch wide Woven Roving for heavy lay-ups"
