Well yeah Ive only made one fiberglass box before, but for 2 12's sealed. This box will be built inside the car and wont be able to be removed to test strength, so Ill probly just overdo it, then fiberglass in some crossbracing and such (since i wont be able to access sides)thin layers are easier to apply, thick requires less layers. if you are experienced with fg then you can go thick but if not thin is easier to apply. either way you have to have enough layers so that it will not flex. if you can stand on it with no flex (and weight 150-200lbs) it is strong enough.
that being said, based on your needs (3k+ of power) i would layer it up until you though it was thick enough and then add at least another 1/4"-3/8" on top of that.
You will need to do more than 1-2 layers. It will be to thin and crack. You will want to do anywhere from 6-8 layers. You can buy bulk packs of mat that comes in 20-60 square yards. As far as the matt goes you will want to use 6oz because it will contour much eaiser to the wheel wells than a much heaver matt will making less work for you.Going to be building a new box soon, and instead of building a basic square between the wheel wells like I always do, Id like to go over my wheel wells and general weird shape of the sides of my car, and get all the possible air space a possible and make it mostly out of fiberglass.
The front baffle, bottom, rear and top, most likely will be MDF, but the sides will be full fiberglass, and then the entire thing lined with glass 1-2 layers.
Is there a cheap online source for mat? I only have some thin chop mat available locally, and its like $8/yard. Ive already found cheaper on ebay.
But I dont know if I should simply buy TONS of thin stuff (6oz mat) or if I should buy somer like 24oz thick *** matt. I dont know how many layers I will need to get sufficient strength.
Anybody have a source, or a suggestion, possible idea how ammount of glass needed. I can get resin for $40/gallon local, and shipping would **** on a can to canada, so Ill probly just stick to local for that.
Thanks for any help
For the 2 layers, I meant 2 layers to line the entire box once its finished. As I said the front back top and bottom will be MDF. And the sides will be thick *** fiberglass, but I meant Ill coat the entire inside of the box when I think Ive got it structurally soundYou will need to do more than 1-2 layers.
