Fi Q 12" mechanical noise?

My friend thinks that the noise coming from the new aero port box we made is port noise, however i believe it to be mechanical noise.

It is a weird clicking sound, like wires tapping on the port, and on high excursion it sounds really weird, like the foam surround is actually making noise, like the noise you would get if you squeezed a nerf ball? I cant explain it.

But are Fi Q's known for mechanical noise? I think it is so noticeable because he has it in an open cab car, he is really upset about it, it even makes the noise at lower volumes. What is goin on?

Edit: Also he gets rid of this "noise" when he makes the LPF at 40hz, which i think is ridiculous.

Also: It made this noise in a 1.4cuft sealed box as well, but you could only hear it with high excursion, sounds like the foam on the surround is making the noise.

The sub doesn't sound broke by any means, it just makes more noise than previous subs we have heard, like my PG RSDC 12" doesn't make the noise at all.

Never heard of that one before...never had a mechanical noise out of one...unless somebody broke one from playing under tuning with no ssf.

Did he try a different amp if he has access to one?

There will be no selling, lol. Just wanted some answers. The sub was played in a sealed box for about two months, this new box is ported at 32hz. Port noise wouldn't make clicking would it?

The sub is getting ~ 1200w rms from a hifonics 1608D

also dont forget that this is in a HATCH!

Yea i ran it off of 2 alpine mono's and it still made the noise. But now with it in a ported box it sounds like the noise is louder. I swear its the FOAM making a funny noise when it is stretched a little bit.

None of my rubber surround subs have made this noise.

It is not distortion either, i have my deck sub level to flat and im using a PG line driver sending 4v to my amp which is tuned all by DMM, everything is setup properly and is very clean.

You can't see a sine wave form with a DMM //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif. You can only see voltage. So if you set your gain for a given X impedance you may still be doing something you should not be. The only way you can 'see' this and 'know' 100% is with an Oscilloscope.

Honestly, I have never ever heard anything like this before, with thousands of speakers on the market and over 10 years in the industry i've never ran across anything like this.

Are you sure that you don't have a 'leak' or something around a screw hole or playing below tuning with the subsonic filter in the wrong position?

This is just very very very odd //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif. Regardless, we'll get it figured out for you.

Thanks!

Sounds like maybe a misaligned coil, I know I had a sub with one before, didn't always make a noise, but when turned up it made one similar to what you are describing. It happens, if thats the case I know Fi will take care of you.

Apparently it is port noise, i never thought port noise sounded so weird. Sounds like some fluttering, but i took the sub out and free aired it and no sounds, so its the port. I beveled the port a bit with a 1/2" bit and a router, it helped a bit but you can still hear it if you open the hatch and listen.

Next time i will buy some flared extensions and use them.

Thanks for the help guys.

OP: Glad it was port noise. Let me know if you need any more help.

I leave it full because I can't keep up with a PM box on every forum and multiple email accounts..

Pretty sure Scott checked on Friday and it hadn't cleared customs for whatever reason. Canada is terrible to ship to these days. I'll let you know a definite tomorrow.

ok cool

If it made the same sound in a sealed box, then it's not port noise. Something had to have changed when reinstalling or some settings on your amp.

Out of curiosity does this have the old tinsel leads or the new sandwiched leads? When you said a "clicking" sound, that sounds allot like tinsel slap imo. With the amount of power you have it's definitely possible too.
