so i was out at a caraudio store checking out hu's and i gotta say i'm dissappointed....I mean hu in general felt cheap and flimsey..... i really wasn't impressed by any of their quality. i saw a alpine 9857, 9861, eclipse cd5000, cd7000, 8445, kenwood x990, pioneer p880prs, p990 and a couple others that i can't remember.

now i know that there are much more "highend units" like mcintosh or denon or.... but i was expecting something more solid and sturdy for $300-$500.

so this is just a bit of a rant lol

anyways, that leads me to my question. is there a really sturdy and good looking hu out there? i mean like metal trim and heavy bottons lol

Hey, at least you have shops to go and look at those head units. No shops arund here carry any of the higher lines of Pioneer, Kenwood, or Eclipse.

I've noticed the same things. But I've been into this hobby for so long I like to compare everyting to my old Alpine 7146, LOL!!! I checked out all of the Eclipse units at Circuit City and wasn't really very impressed. My local favorite Car audio shop that I've shopped with for the last 17 years is a Kenwood/Alpine/Clarion Dealer so I can check out off of them. The only one I can't check out is Premeir, Best Buy has all the regular Pioneer models, but no one in town has Premeir.

I don't want to order anything off the net so I'll probably end up with a Kenwood.

If you really want to be picky look for the old Rockford Fosgate head unit. It's made by Denon, but less expensive and often people don't realize what it is worth.
