Externally regulating an internal regulated alternator.

I have a HO 250 amp internally regulated alternator and im wondering is it possible to pull out the regulator and wire up an external adjustable regulator(Id guess with some serious work), or will it just hook right up?

Well my voltage is pretty low, i just want a 1v boost for now. Then down the line id get a step down module and some 16v kinetiks and run 18v. The MLA modules cost more than the adjustable regulators.
