Encoding make a difference?

Okay, hopefully pretty soon here I'm going to be doing a large battery of tests on factors that may affect mp3 sound quality. I will be comparing the different bit rates, how they compare to the original, etc. I would also like to compare mp3s with wma files. I'm planning on using Exact Audio Copy + Lame for the mp3 rips/encoding but EAC and Lame do not encode in wma format. I was thinking about just ripping the wav and encoding it with a different program. I don't think it should make a difference but I want to know what you guys think?

I'm also looking for a great dynamic song that will expose the highs and lows. I was thinking something from Dave Matthews but I'm open to suggestions.

i don't think it will make any difference, since they are two competing formats anyway.

btw, a very dynamic CD to use would be Fine Young Cannibals' "The Raw and the Cooked"... i'm not a fan or anything, but HOLY CRAP the production and space on that CD is impressive. Michael Jackson's BAD also comes to mind. stunningly mastered CRAP. but still, a good reference CD.
