Emergency: Quick Question

Im currently taking off the door trim for the first time and I need to know how to remove the black-tary (asphault?) substance that the original 2004Ford Escape moisture barrier was using. Ive tried cutting it off with a putty knife, which gets mosts of it off, but just smears a bottom layer. What can I do to get this off asap? I am on a timelimit this week so fast feedback is appreciated. If not ill have to lay the damplifier over it, I guess giving it a double sticky surface :p

Do you have any Acetone, enamel reducer, thinner, etc. That will take it off, just put it on a rag or towel and clean it up, try not to get it "running" all over the place though (ie: paint that will be visible after panel is on) Some of that stuff will soften, dull, etch the paint.

werd, on my doors, i put the edead over that white ****, and stuck like a champ. unless your anal about that kind of shiet, but on top of it wont hurt.
