ELECTRICIANS!! House dryer receptical. X/Y which is red which is black?

Im trying to wire up an extension cord for my welder that I have to plug into my house 220 receptical. SO Im trying to wire up the 4 wires into a dryer receptical I got for the female end, the receptical is clear labelled white and green.

But for the black and red connections, it is marked X and Y

I dont know which wires belongs to which letter and Id rather not burn anything down today

Thanks

I sense a major fail coming //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

hope thats a beefy extension cord!!!!
Yeah it is, its 16feet, so I went with 8 gauge for all 4 of the wires

I already put it together, crimped and wrapped and it worked perfectly

And yes I wear my mask, had a few flashes where i had to miss a day of work and get some drops a few years ago, wont do it again, haing your eyes burning no matter what you do is the worst pain Ive ever had

I called maytag.... they say red X, black Y.....
It doesn't matter. The red and black are hot (110 volts each). The green is the ground, the last should be white = neutral.

The power runs from one hot, at 110v to the neutral. While that one is hot the other is at zero (180 degrees out of phase). Then the power "alternates" to the other hot to 110v to the neutral, while the first hot goes down to zero. This goes back and forth 60 times a second.

The neutral is always pulling 110v.

Pic of said ghetto harness I made....

wat? what about when you need 277? the 220 is the 2 110s at each other the neutral is on the dryer for control voltage. the heater on that dryer never sees a neutral.

is that plug just one that had the wire cut then crimped or soldered? if it is that will come apart eventually go get a real one that will hold the wire tight and keep the connections safe inside of it
