Eclipse MP3 HU and bitrate

I'm considering the purchase of either an Eclipse CD3403 or CD3414 head unit. I've been reading conflicting information about whether or not you could play MP3s encoded above the 128kbps bitrate - does anyone know whether or not this is the case? Can you play VBR (variable bitrate) MP3s as well?

Finally, does anyone know if the random function on these units allows you to restrict yourself just to a folder, or if it only randomly plays the whole CD? Thanks!!!

FYI all, this is an e-mail that I got from Eclipse in response to my query about their HUs playing at more than 128 kbps:

"Hello Jean,

This is true depending on the head unit some of our head unit will not guarantee play over a 128kbps. Thank you for taking the time to writing to Eclipse and we hope you consider us for any of your future product needs. If you have any further question, please call or e-mail us.
