Eclipse 7124 Burning smell

Don't kill that beautiful sub you bastage!

You have your gains set intelligently don't you?

A little bit of VC stank is normal on a brand new sub as the glue on the VC heats up for the first time, but constant and excessive stink is an indicator that you have poorly set your gains or are using too much bass boost.

I have no bass boost from the amp and yes I have set the gains....I don't set them in the car....I set tham at the sub so I can hear it......

My JL 12w3v2 didn't smell like this....and it running off of the same set-up.

EVen 50% volume emits the smell but not as strong....it is in a sealed enclosure and has been installed for 6 days now....

stink sub...i wouldn't say it's burnt...as stones said your gains could be messed up...read the gain setting tutorial...then let the sub play for a while then reply

I called them already as it was doing it from day one......I called back and they have a call into Eclipse ....they never sold this model...they always sell the 73xx series.

Its not blown....still works okay...but it has never been as good as my JLw3v2 I may go back to JL

Quote-"Many other Soundsplinter owners have complained of the same problems though when they first got their subs and the reason was thet the suspention needs to loosen up.

Alot of subs use different types of spiders that do not change after breakin, so if you are changin from one of those to a Soundsplinter your first thought will be "this sounds like shit compared to my old one". They are not shit they are just a different type of woofer that uses a different type of material in its spider, calm down give it time, it will sound awsome after some time.

I remember going from some old Pioneer 303's(diamondplates) to a pair of Eclipse 8700's and I thought they sounded like shit compared to my old Pioneers, it was explained to me that they needed to breakin due to their spider so I went with it thinking theres no way that these are gonna change that much but sure enough they cleared right up and started playing super loud. To this day those eclipses are among the best sounding subs I have ever owned."

my 9152ti will make the good ol VC smell everyonce in a while, its from the sub getting really hot, feel the cone after you start to smell it, (with system off heh) and if it is real hot let the thing cool down, i hate that smell, from from many blown subs in my past.

my ti cone is really hot when i smell that, (only happend 2-3 times) but the sub still beats harder than ever

and chek the amp gains like everyone is saying, and x-overs

I love Eclipse but to be honest, you could just not like the way Eclipse sounds. but I do recommend letting them break in before you make your final decision. It took my Ti about 5months to break in with 750wrms.

As for the VC smell, could be glue or you could just be sending it too much power. The 7124 is the model being discussed correct? Cant remember the specs on it so I wont go too much into it.

Yea I'm running the 7124 in series....giving my amp a 4ohm load. Sub is rated at 450w continous my amp is a MBQuart RAA4200 with channel 3&4 bridged...400w going to the sub. The enclosure is fiberglass/MDF and is 1.3 cubic ft sealed.

It has good low end....but I listen to alot of Dance/House music and its missing the punch my JL had....

Anyways...I started digging around some and noticed that the sub would move to easy when I pushed in by hand....I removed the sub and noticed that my pilot holes for the screws were made to small and created small mounds when I installed the screws not giving it a tight seal. I removed the humps and reinstalled the sub...now shes hard to move....rest my gains...and all seems much better....I gave her some for about 20 minutes and didn't get a smell...now she has got some punch.....I had good low end before but was lacking on the punch.
