Ear piercing, horrible static noise

I was listening to my system the other day while driving and all of the sudden I got this horrendous noise through all of the speakers. It was far louder than the music and sounded like one of those emergency alert tones on TV but with static too. I had to pop the faceplate off to shut it off immediately.

I didn't want to mess with it that night because it was three in the morning, so when I woke up today I went out checked all my RCA's that hook up inside the dash to make sure they weren't touching anything. I then put the faceplate back on and turned it on. All was well.

Anyone know why this might of happened. I definately don't want this again. Thanks.

hahaha, was it an mp3?

lots of recording companies put up fake files that are the exact same length, bitrate, size, and title of songs people put online that are nothing but static......

then when you're downloading the file, each bit you downloaded from them will be 0db white noise.

don't download music if you like your speakers

x2. I had it happen on a few songs but I'm assuming that you've heard this song before and this isnt the case...

I'm just curious...what does an ear peircing have to do with this as the title states? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif

You may want to also check to make sure none of your speaker terminals are making contact with the chassis of the car. You should blow a fuse if this happens but I put 6.5's in my rear deck and my stratus has this stupid bar that pushes the speakers up so I was getting a really bad static and I found out that the speaker terminal was touching the car and causing it.

Lol when I read the thread title I thought your "ear piercings" caused the horrible static noise //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I've listened to the CD many times before. It's not a bad MP3. I'm also 99% sure it isn't the amps or speaker terminal. If I disconnect the RCA's I don't get any noise. Plus all that wiring was done myself and I know it was done right. The only variable could be the new head unit I had installed by a local shop.

I think it is this because when I checked it this morning I didn't turn the car on. Just the key to accessory. To my dismay, when I turned the car on, I had a whole lot of engine whine. I think I may have lost the ground on the head unit or to my EQ. I know it is something back there, because if I move the wires around I get some weird noises. I'm sure a wire broke or something and is contacting something it shouldn't be. To bad I don't have the keys to take the head unit out and can't get to all the wires behind it. Looks like I'll have to take it back to the shop. Unless any of you have a bright idea to get a Panasonic head unit out. Thanks for the input.

I was able to get to all the connections off of the harness on the head unit. Ground, power, and acc wires all look fine. Everything off the EQ looks good too. So my original thoughts are wrong. I still have horrendous engine whine though.

If I cut the signal from the head unit all of the engine noise goes away. If I'm thinking correct, this would eliminate everything after the head unit as the cause for the engine noise. Right?

Next I noticed that the wires off the head unit for speakers (Which aren't in use because I'm using the pre-outs to power amps are uncovered. Also they can and have touched to ground. Could this have damaged the head unit and done something that could cause permanent engine whine? If so the shop that installed it is gonna be buying me a new head unit //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif Thanks for your thoughts.

I would guess that if the wires are uncovered and the internal amp isn't defeated it would definitely be a problem. Insulate the ends of those wires and give it a try. If you want to rule out the amps or speakers you could run them off another source and see if the noise goes away but it sounds like you are on the right track.

I'd be pretty mad if I paid for an install and found bare wires behind my dash afterward. No excuse for being that sloppy, even if it was a dead wire.

Might be a good time to install your own head unit! It's easy and you'll know it was done correctly.

There is no engine whine or problem with static when car is off. If I only turn it to acc and the engine isn't on everything sounds fine. Does this mean the headunit may be okay? Or is there still a chance it may have been toasted?
