Dynamat alternative

I'm planning on using "Weatherguard" as a Dynamat alternative and needed some help. Firstly, I've looked into it and a lot of people are saying that its almost identicle to Dynama.t... is that true?

Also, I came across 2 types of Weatherguard: one is 3' x 65' for $49 (CAD) and the other is 100' x 1' is around the same price, but the material is a little thicker... Which one should I go for?

I'm using this to cover my Isuzu Rodeo so I would need quite a bit of material, and if I go with the first one (3'x65'), should I use 2 or more layers for parts that rattle more?? (the roof rattles like crazy!)

Thanks in advance for the help!

I've only heard the name before....any idea as to what it's made out of? Also, find out how heat-resistant it is....some products are only resistant up to like 80 degrees, so if it ever gets hotter than that, you could have a big mess on your hands...

And I'd go with the 100x1....much easier to work with than a big *** sheet that is 3 feet wide....

Agreed. I just started installing my second skin and i found it easiest to work with 12"x12" squares. That way you can make sure you don't get air trapped in it and it is much easier to work with.

Originally posted by Slaymon $150 for 70 sq. ft. is a lil too much. I'm lookin for a cheap alternative. Is this weatherguard available at home depot or lowes?
I think second skin is like $70 for 50 sq. ft. Contact ifandorbuts about it. And i can truthfully say that his stuff doesn't smell, well at least not yet. But i've heard that his doesn't smell, so i'd suggest it.

The "StormGuard" and products like that that you can find at local hardware stores ARE asphalt mat...

But they aren't as thick as the stuff used in the car audio aftermarket.. and adding mass is the key to their effectiveness. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Also, the adhesives used on these products is simply intended to hold the product on a roof prior to a shingling job... it's been widely reported by many that the adhesives simply aren't good enough to properly bond to metal, it easily peels off. And given the intended use of the adhesive, I wouldn't have any faith that it would actualy last over time.

Given that this stuff is thinner, it makes it almost manditory to layer this product up... placing even higher importance on an inherently weaker adhesive. Not a good thing! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/nono.gif.eca61d170185779e0921b0faa9704973.gif

I'm also one to look for a bargain...

But having to apply my own glue to material like this sounds like a nightmare install job to me... as does having to do the job twice (layering it, after all!).

I'd check out:

This looks like really good stuff, I've seen some pictures of installs with it. It not only comes in a thick 45 mil thickness, but a 60 mil thick version too! And for way less than Dynamat. I've heard the adhesion is great, and no smell.

$125 for 100 sq.ft. if I recall (45 mil).

Alternatively, I just found out about:

http://www.fatmat.com

This also looks like really good stuff, although I haven't seen any installs with it. But I have talked online to people who have used it, and they say it had fantastic workability and adhesion.. no heat required! They did say that the car had a slight odor for a couple weeks, but then it went away, they attributed to the adhesive curing.

Only $99 for 100 sq.ft. of this stuff (45 mil).

Good luck!

I'm installing some of this stuff as we speak. And i can honestly say that it doesn't smell at all. Great stuff to work with and is VERY sticky. I can't wait to finish up my whole truck with it. BTW, i'm using the 45 mil thick stuff. I got a good deal on it so I'm doubling up everywhere. I'll have some pics once i finish off my roll of film.

Originally posted by bass maniak iv heard some pretty good stuff about brown bread but i think its more expensive then dynamat but i dont know
There's quite a few good Dynamat alternatives out there. Brown Bread, eDead, FatMat, Second Skin, etc. etc. I have Second Skin in my car, and I absolutely love it. It's $50 for 50 sq feet of the Damplifier (45 mils thick), and I believe $75 for 50 sq feet of the Extreme version (60 mils thick). Of course, these prices are only for forum members //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif. There is vritually no smell, it's very easy to work with, very easy to apply, and most important, it does the job. And quite well.

Oh yeah, ifandorbuts sells it. http://www.secondskinaudio.com
