Was talkting to a local dealer in my area about a replacement amp since my Orion hcca 5000 has died for the 4th time! Was looking for a replacement amp to drive my 2 kicker 12"cvx's, was telling him they were dual 2ohm wired together for a 2ohm load and was looking for something to do around 1500-1800 watts rms on a 2 ohm load. He suggested that I just run 1 voice coil off each sub wired to make 1 ohm load!! Has anyone else tried (done) this successfully??? The manual on my kickers says to make sure both voice coil are wired, but he claims they have been doing this for years and never had any problems with it!! Any comments or other info on this would be greatly appreciated !! Thanks!

Honstly, how do places like that stay open???

What I can't understand is that this shop has been in my area in business for years. It is one of the oldest audio shops in my area, and they do alot of business!

I always in the past trusted what they were talking about, but this time I wanted a second (or more) opinion! more comments would be appreciated!!! Thanks

You can do it but unless you know exactly what you are doing, you may as well toss the specs of the subs right out the window. Pretty much every T/S parameter on the sub will be altered by only using one coil and unless you know what they have changed to you can't design a box for them. You also are going to half the thermal power handling. Bottom line, you have the right idea, find something that will give you the power you want at 2 ohms.

Go to another store. It is possible to do but if you are only wiring one voice coil it more or less halve the power handling of each subwoofer. Find an amp that will suit your needs for how the subwoofers were intended to be used. I'll go ahead and say that the only reason he told you to do this is because he wants to sell you an amp he has in his store that can power them at one ohm. I would say most stores around my area don't offer 1500 watts at 2 ohm. The only place i can go is a place that sells Kicker amps.
