dpx503 and ipod question

i just bought a kenwood dpx503 and i think i have the basics of it figured out, but I still have an ipod problem. I am unable to work the ipod when it is plugged into the head unit. I'd rather be able to navigate between artists, songs, whatever, from the ipod than the head unit, but is this possible?
