downfiring ported enclosure?

i have a customer with a jeep wrangler, which will basically be uncovered. he uses it primarily for off road use, but still wants some bass. therefore, ive thought to try a downfiring enclosure. sub will be a single 12 MTX 7500 on about 500-600 watts. i know this sub sounds pretty good in a small ported box (customer uses one on his boat), but ive never tried to downfire both sub and port. any ideas on how this will sound? and if it works, how much distance in recommended between port opening and the floor of the vehicle? thanks for any help.

hmm. looks like it might take a bit to get the angles and stuff right though. a little more time and that looks like an awesome option, i just dont know if i can get it done in my time frame. in ported downfire applications, have you actually used (for example) a bent slot port firing down as well?

I haven't but I think trying to design and build a port would be just as much work. I do think it would be a good idea though for that situation, really if you can find a horn design they do well in open air environments as well.

I have done down firing port/sub in ext cab trucks before. It works great if you design it well. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

hmmm. explain? i know the box i did for his boat was simply 2 cu ft after disp. port and sub on same plane. dimensions i have to work with on this box are about 35" wide, 15" high, 18" deep (front to back depth, not up and down). i believe the sub is only about 6 inches mounting depth, which will leave plenty of clearance below. without a gap there is about a total of 4.3 cu ft in that space, so i know with a good gap i can still build a good box there.

For one sub you have plenty of room to just build a ported box with a gap distance of your choosing really I would think 4 inches or so would be best. I'm not the best with box designs though you should chat more with rabbit.
