does the size of a sub box matter?

Correct... Its not necessary the size of the box, every driver likes a different box... But in general, the bigger the box in the given size range, the more bass you are going to get. Shallow mounts are descent for what they are, but will never truly compete with "regular" subs.

U need to bust out a tape measure and see what all as far as room you are willing to give up and then see what your sub options are. There are mnay subs that dont have a deep mounting depth or require a massive box but are not "shallow" subs which I would never run.

This ^^^

You could always run some 8s... Or some companies even make 6.5s now...
