Ok so what increases its power or does it naturally put out that

no,no,no only increases the voltage signal going into the amp
What determines how many volts go into the signal the head unit

So be it. Ill ban each and every one of them.
Muchos butthurt ITT

OP - The gain alters the amount of power the amp puts out, HOWEVER it is very important to know that turning the knob all the way clockwise is not "100% volume". Rotating the knob matches up the amp with your RCA voltage that your headunit is putting out, which is 99% of the time 2v or 4v. Most amps will allow you to adjust the gain to compensate for RCA voltages ranging from 6v to 0.2v. So, if your headunit is putting out a 2v signal, and you crank the knob all the way to the right, you've gone way past the 2v mark and now your amp is clipping. You can use a DMM to properly setup your amp so you lower your chance of breaking anything.

inb4 someone telling me an o-scope is the best way to set your amp.
