what i mean to ask is, if i run a SQ sub like a JL w6 or an image dynamics driver, with an amp thats not exactly an "sq" amp, will it still sound just as good?
Def makes a difference, maybe not in the "sound" of the music, but cheap amps often have more backround hissing /distortion, nor do I trust there filters /xovers at all
IMHO and from personal experience I've noticed that a SQ amplifier is much harder to distinguish a difference in sound from a lower cost amplifier that produces the same amount of clean, unclipped, RMS power on subwoofers. After all, you have to take into consideration the facts that our hearing is least sensitive in those lower octaves and roughly 15% or less of the musical content is reproduced in this frequency range. Unless one is going for a show quality install or wants to compete in the SQ classes, one can usually spend less on the subwoofer amplifier and get away with it, provided it produces clean (as in unclipped) RMS power!
i mostly want to keep my Sundown and AQ amps when i switch to the SQ oriented setup. just for the sub. im going to use a nice sq amp for the midbass and tweets
you will be able to tell more difference in the quality of the speakers than the amp powering them. As long as the amplifier is producing the correct unclipped RMS wattage you demand at an acceptable efficiency and is built to last as long as you want, there is no reason to buy a different amplifier.
a watt is a watt is a watt.
watts do not determine sound quality and are only a unit of work over time.
I had a JL 12w6v2 and i wasn't to impressed by it. I just wish i could have built a sealed box for it before i had sold it.personally i think it does make it a difference, thats just me though.
